Getting on the Same Page is Mission-Critical

The recent assassination attempt was a colossal failure of leadership clarity.

The Secret Service has one main job - to protect its charges.

It failed abysmally in recent weeks. Why?

Poor leadership and bad communication/collaboration practices.

Secret Service agents were supposed to coordinate effectively with local law enforcement personnel, but it has become obvious that there was confusion and indecision about responsibilities and rules of engagement. Security, which should have been airtight, had a distinct resemblance to Swiss cheese.

Leaders, from the top all the way down to ground operations, need to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Roles, responsibilities, and appropriate reactions clearly understood. Catastrophically, that did not happen. Confusion and negligence allowed a shooter to take an obvious position and squeeze off multiple shots.

This event was an extremely high-profile example of something we see often, in every realm. A lack of leadership clarity, leading to confusion. If we’re charged with developing effective leaders, the primary skill we need to impart and encourage is clear communication.

Getting on the same page is not optional. It’s mission-critical.

Lives depend on it.
