Gaining Career Clarity #2
Where do you want to go?
In the first post of this series, we addressed the question: Who am I (at the DNA level)? What keywords describe my superpower?
Here's our next crucial question for mapping our career direction: Where do you want to go?
That turns into a series of questions, actually, such as:
Do you want to remain in a (small/large) company, or do you want to go out on your own (or start a company?)
Do you want to remain in this geographical area, or move elsewhere (where)? Do you want to be fully virtual?
Do you want to move up "the ladder" in your current (or a similar) company in order to land at this type of job: __________________?
Is your current expertise marketable or do you need to invest some years in developing other skills and knowledge?
Are you hoping to retire (when?), or do I want to cultivate an ongoing work practice?
Do you want to move to a remote Pacific island and enjoy non-stop sun, a cool ocean breeze, an endless supply of fruity drinks, and decades of wild, hedonistic pleasures? (OK, that one’s not happening, but still…)
I reached a point in my professional life about 20 years ago when I knew that if I was to achieve my aspirations, I needed to go out on my own and create a unique role. I knew that I would not flourish in a big company and that I did not want to manage others.
I also knew I wanted a "portable" business that I could take with me wherever we'd move. And my passion and skills are such that I don't anticipate some kind of off-the-grid retirement - I will continue doing clarity consulting, writing, and speaking.
Pacific island? My wife and I will only consider it if there’s great coffee, a superb BBQ place, free Internet, and regular flights for my kids and grandkids (nope - not happening).
Here's the deal: your map is up to you. It's not up to some company to craft your future for you. You're a free agent, not a puppet or a victim. You call the shots. We each get to program our GPS and pursue our optimal careers.
You’re a free agent. You can enter the “transfer portal” at any time. And there are so many new business models to pursue!
The point: the world is full of ever-growing, ever-evolving opportunities. And - it’s also full of smart people who can help you along your way.
Don’t be afraid to dream. And don’t be afraid of the process of “getting there.” Set your aim and work in a focused, fulfilling direction. Jobs can be (should be!) stepping stones to finding and doing your best work.
So...where are you going? And how can I help you get there?
